How the Construction Unit Converter works
Converts the units that show up on plans, spec sheets and supply orders: length (inches, feet, yards, millimeters, centimeters, meters), area (square inches, feet and yards, acres, square meters), volume (cubic inches, feet and yards, US gallons, liters, cubic meters) and weight (ounces, pounds, short tons, grams, kilograms, metric tonnes). Type one value and every unit in that group appears at once.
It uses the exact definitions: 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 short ton = 2,000 lb and 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft. Areas and volumes follow from the lengths (1 sq ft = 144 sq in, 1 cu ft = 1,728 cu in, 1 cu yd = 27 cu ft). Results show about 6 significant digits.
Example: 10 cubic yards. 10 × 27 = 270 cu ft, and 270 × 1,728 = 466,560 cu in. Divided by 231 that is 2,019.74 US gallons, and 466,560 × 16.387064 cm³ = 7.6455 cubic meters.
In the length group you can type feet and inches (5' 3 1/2") as well as decimals. Weight converts only to weight: the converter does not turn a volume of water or concrete into pounds, because that depends on the material.
Frequently asked questions
How many gallons are in a cubic foot?
7.48052 US gallons, about 7.48: a cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches and a US gallon is 231 cubic inches, so 1,728 ÷ 231 = 7.48052. In liters it is 28.3168.
How do you convert millimeters to inches?
Divide by 25.4. 100 mm ÷ 25.4 = 3.937", a hair under 3 15/16". The other way, multiply inches by 25.4: 3/4" = 19.05 mm.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
27, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. 10 cubic yards is 270 cubic feet.
How many pounds are in a ton?
