Total fall (drop) of a horizontal drain over common runs: fall = run in feet × inches of fall per foot. 1/4" per foot is a 2.08% grade, 1/8" per foot 1.04% and 1/16" per foot 0.52%.
Minimum slope for horizontal drainage piping, IPC Table 704.1 (2021): 1/4" per foot for 2½" and smaller, 1/8" per foot for 3" to 6", 1/16" per foot for 8" and larger. The IRC (Table P3005.3) uses the same values for houses; the UPC (708.1) calls for 1/4" per foot and allows 1/8" for 4" and larger only where the AHJ approves. Local codes and amendments may differ, so treat this chart as a reference, not an approval.

Fall for runs of 5 to 100 feet

Example: 40 ft of 2" drain at 1/4" per foot falls 40 × 0.25 = 10".

Slope in percent and degrees

Percent grade = inches of fall per foot ÷ 12 × 100, and the angle is arctan(inches per foot ÷ 12).
